Take me to the sunshine
where you can hear the river’s echo
your future clings to
those eyes you saw the past upon
history as a drop splashes upward
suspended still
a star in itself
shining light down on us
from long ago
see the horizon through these one last time
forgive the violent world for what it’s shown them
bury them in the sand in a canyon far away
walk blindly for a while
as your ancestors did, as your parents did
to make you, and make them gently
seeds in desert soil
grow them and see the world anew
still ragged, but growing brighter, yes,
and brighter still,
yes!
