A Candle Across the World

Even as the sun burns out

In all directions, expecting to have

Lit the whole world bright with vivid

Detail, exposing every pore, burning

The skin of time,

There will always be shadows.

We share an umbrella at lunch; the sun cannot see us.

Comb across the blades of grass, the sun does not reach the beatles as they crawl.

Two lovers sleepily lie looking up through yellow leaves;

The sun cannot see them.

I wonder: if it was just you and me in all of empty space, at opposite ends of the dark universe, would I see your light? Would it shine through forever, through me, through grass and past leaves?
